It is designed to absorb lateral forces that the point will experience as it comes in contact with debris from different angles along it's route

It is actually 3" in diameter and will make a hole large enough to accommodate a 2" Sch 40 pipe with a coupling

The point is screwed into the PVC pipe and cuts threads on the inside of the pipe much like a tap

the push cap may be struck with a hammer to drive the pipe past the obstruction and on to the other side
